Perfection

Countless times I heard people mention that humans aren't perfect and it's futile to try to be. But for some reason, I still kept working towards being able to say "I'm perfect." I wanted to be the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the perfect speaker, etc.

Then last week, someone said flat out, "Sophie, you don't have to be perfect." And it finally clicked: "Imperfect is okay." It's better than okay, really. It's how we're made.

Guess what? This past week has been much more manageable and enjoyable than any week I can remember.

Even my speech seems to have improved. I still stutter, but I feel much better about it, which when it comes right down to it is all that really matters.

So I think (and I'm probably a bit slow to catch on) the key to being happy and content is to replace the impossible goal of "I'm perfect" with the more practical goal of "imperfect."

Same letters. Just a different way of looking at them.

Being perfect would be so incredibly boring! There would be nothing to work towards!

Roger,

Thank you for the kind words and for the video recommendation.

Personally, I think viewing stuttering as merely a habit is a bit of an oversimplification, but I do see how striving to have perfect speech can compound the problem. And it is helpful to remember that everyone, even fluent speakers, bump through words occasionally.

Thank you again!

hi sophie,

yes maybe your right... all i know is that after watching all his videos, i seriously thought i had become fluent, as in overnight. Admittedly i relapsed recently, but i will watch these again, they get you in a great mindset. Hey, as hard as it maybe to believe, maybe it could be simple, but we overcomplicated. Well good luck, hope we can both overcome this :) x
